Mast Cell Lines

At abm, we understand that mast cells are pivotal to allergic reactions. These tissue‐resident immune cells are found in the skin, airways, gastrointestinal tract, and other organs—where they act as sentinels at the body’s environmental interfaces. Equipped with high‐affinity receptors (FcεRI) for immunoglobulin E (IgE), mast cells become "armed" when IgE antibodies bind to these receptors in sensitized individuals. Upon re-exposure to an allergen, the cross-linking of these IgE molecules triggers mast cell degranulation. This process releases a variety of mediators—preformed substances such as histamine, proteases, and heparin, along with newly synthesized leukotrienes, prostaglandins, and cytokines—that rapidly induce effects like vasodilation, increased vascular permeability, smooth muscle contraction, and mucus secretion. These events underpin common allergic conditions including hives, allergic rhinitis, asthma, and, in severe cases, anaphylaxis.

For both allergy research and drug development, access to consistent, functional mast cells is essential. Although primary mast cells can be isolated and purified, this approach is costly, labor-intensive, and often subject to significant batch-to-batch variability, which can compromise experimental outcomes. Recognizing these challenges, abm has developed a comprehensive collection of mast cell lines with robust and reproducible degranulation responses. In tandem with these cell lines, we have optimized a high-quality mast cell degranulation assay kit designed to streamline your research, ensuring reliable results and accelerating your drug discovery efforts.
